Once Upon a Twist: Fairy Tale Retellings in Media ๐โ๏ธ๐
Updates from my first (nearly sold-out!) DemiCon and slides from my panel
Hello!
Iโm still getting back into routine after DemiCon, but I had so much fun between paneling, talking about books, meeting readers, catching up with friends, and spending time with my mom, who did a fantastic job running the table when I was on panels. ๐โ๏ธ๐
This was my first DemiCon, though the convention has been running for 35 years (sometimes online when necessary) and itโs very local to me. Iโm so glad I was invited! It was wonderful to see all kinds of fandom communities come together.
I had the opportunity to have a reading of Forsaken Beauty and the Etherbeast and I participated in several panels during the con. It was a blast talking about fairy tale retellings, steampunk, villains, and alternate history!
I only have slides from Once Upon a Twist: Fairy Tale Retellings since I had co-panelists in the other sessions. The latter were formatted more like discussions. When Iโm more rested, I will share the list of steampunk books from the Steampunk 101 panel I was on with members of the BrassGears Adventurers Society.
Once Upon a Twist: Fairy Tale Retellings
Fairy tales are archetypal stories that have been passed down for generations, across cultures and continents. These stories often feature magic, adventure, romance, and moral lessons. Fairy tales have also inspired countless retellings and adaptations in different media, such as novels, films, musicals, comics, and video games. By changing the setting, characters, plot, and genre, the possibilities for reimaginings are endless. In this panel, we will examine some of the most creative examples of fairy tale retellings in media, such as Cinder, Wicked, Fables, and Snow, Glass, Apples.ย

While my list isnโt exhaustive, I loved talking about different fairy tale retellings in media. Iโm considering adapting the presentation for the Chicago Steampunk Expo next May.
But first, I need to rest and recover from DemiCon! In the coming days, Iโll have more pictures to post from the con. This was was my fifth event since the end of February. I loved having so many opportunities to connect with readers in person (and make so many fantastic memories!) but itโll be good to have time to work on revisions for my next book!
My next confirmed signing events aren't until fall. This will give me plenty of time to reorder books. By the end of DemiCon, I only had a couple copies of Forsaken Beauty and the Etherbeast left. Monsters and Machines completely sold out again! (You can still find my books at most retailers. Iโll need to reorder books for anyone wanting a signed copy sent to them via the order form on my website.)
Iโll be leaving in a few weeks for the Nebulas, which is the only writing craft/business conference I attend right now. Aside from that, my plans this summer are to double down on revisions and take my family on adventures during my sonsโ break. ๐
Happy reading!
Kelsey
Will you have copies of your older books at the Chicago Steampunk Expo next year? (Tail of Two Worlds and The Hazel Fae)
I hope to have those stories at the Expo in some form! The Hazel Fae was part of a limited time anthology, Once Upon a Winter. When the anthology went out of print, the rights to the novella went back to me. Between projects, I'm hoping to expand the story since it had to be short novella length for the anthology.
A Tail of Two Worlds is still in print as part of an anthology in Mirror, Mirror. Unfortunately, the publisher won't make author copies available to me. However, I own the rights to A Tail of Two Worlds. I'm contemplating either having a small chapbook size print made of the short story or reworking the story into a novel. I have more ideas for the characters, so it's a possibility!
Thank you for asking! I'd love to have more of my steampunk fairy tales in print ๐โ๏ธ๐
