Presentation: Strange Happenings at the 1893 World's Fair
View my slides from the Chicago Steampunk Expo panel
I had so much fun at the Chicago Steampunk Expo! I had a table for my books, presented one of my favorite topics using my notes from Monsters and Machines, attended a masquerade, and met so many wonderful people. I can’t wait to return next year!
I wanted to make my slides available after the panel, especially for those in the back of the room. If you click on the banner above or the link here, you can view my presentation. At a later date, I might record my talk, but for now, I have unpacking and revising on my fiction WIP to do!
Strange Happenings at the 1893 World's Fair
Alternate history is popular in steampunk storytelling, but what happens when reality is stranger than fiction? Come learn about the 1893 World’s Fair that almost wasn’t and the curious events surrounding the exposition.
With fierce competition between cities to host the Fair and the War of the Currents, the Columbian Exposition had a challenging start. We’ll discuss the myriad of problems faced by the scale of the construction of the White City, inventions and products debuted, the multitude of notable international visitors, and shocking crimes committed in Chicago during the Fair. Finally, we’ll examine examples of the 1893 World’s Fair in media.
Thank you again to everyone who attended my panel! I truly loved the opportunity to share my research notes.
Happy reading!
