Today I looked at the calendar and realized that my birthday will already be here on Monday, which also means for me that convention season is coming soon! (I also got the ball rolling for a birthday present to myself for a Forsaken Beauty and the Etherbeast themed tattoo that I’m so excited about!)

The DemiCon Schedule is Live! 🎉

I’m so excited to kick off my convention season at DemiCon! This year’s theme, Outpost 37, is all about the influence of Westerns on sci-fi and fantasy. I had so much fun coming up with panels for this year’s convention and my research has taken me some fascinating places. I can’t wait to share more! I’m doing a Monstrous Women 2.0 talk during the convention to fit this year’s theme, and I get to talk about the cowboy in Dracula. So excited!!

I will also be in the Brass Gears Adventures Radio Show on Sunday at noon! This year's offering is Death On the Falcon, A Locked Airship Mystery. I’ll have more info to share soon, but I can’t wait to do this again! I had a blast in last year’s show.

When I’m not paneling, I’ll be in the Dealer’s Room with my books on Friday from 2 to 6 pm, Saturday from 10 to 6 pm, and Sunday from 10 to 2 pm. Pending her health, my mom will be attending again to cover my table while I’m away at panels. (Mom has been in the hospital a few times this year and is slowly on the mend.) She loves attending DemiCon, too, so we’re hopeful that it works out for her to come.

My book, Forsaken Beauty and the Etherbeast, was up for the Bibliomancy Award, along with the other books on the reading list for Temporal Textual Talks: A Steampunk Book Club. I was elated to be in the company of Gail Carriger, T. Kingfisher, Theodora Goss, and so many other authors I admire!

The day before the awards show, my area had been hit with a strong blizzard and I was content to settle in to watch the Tippy Golden Teacup Awards in my comfy clothes after spending all Friday with my boys on their snow day.

Imagine my surprise and delight when I heard my name called. Forsaken Beauty and the Etherbeast won the Tippy Golden Teacup Award for Bibliomancy! I had a little bit of panic when I was sent a message to join the Live later on in the show and I was still dressed for a snow day at home. I have a closet full of gorgeous outfits for conventions and fantasy balls, but I ended up accepting my award in a sweatshirt. At least it was a cute one! 😂

The Last Teapot Race is Happening at Wild Wild West Con!

Though I’ll be at home, busy with with revisions and preparing for conventions this spring (more on this in a moment), I wanted to highlight two steampunk events having this March:

• Gardens & Gears Steampunk Faire on March 7th, in Milwaukee, WI. Several of my friends from TeslaCon and the Chicago Steampunk Expo will be exhibiting and vending. (Click here for more info)

• The final Wild Wild West Con on March 19th-22, in Tucson, AZ

I truly wish that I would have been able to make it to Wild Wild West Con, as the long running convention is coming to a close and it sounds like an amazing event. (Alas, right now my convention schedule is limited to events in the Midwest.) Madame Askew and the Grand Arbiter are hosting the convention’s final teapot race at this show. This event is dear to them as they’ve been involved since the second year of the convention. They have something special planned for the final teapot race. She had several excellent questions that I haven’t been asked before about my books and writing process, then we played a romantasy edition of “Would You Rather?” (guess how many times I answered pro-monster😂), and then there was a timed sprint from a writing prompt.

While I teased another book idea last week, I ended up playing with the prompt at the end of Charmed Chats instead just for fun (and to take my mind off revisions by working on something completely different.) I’ve still been keeping notes for the new book since then.

A Romantasy Collection to Fight Book Bans

I wanted to share FaRo Society’s charity anthology, Romantasy Rebels, this week because the cause is an important one to me. (If you’re new here, I’m a member of Authors Against Book Bans.) All proceeds will be donated to PEN America, which fights against book bans on multiple fronts. Romantasy Rebels’ limited release had a rough start, getting erroneously taken down TWICE before everything was fixed.

The Importance of Community + 2026 Convention Schedule

The day after I was on Charmed Chats, my mother was hospitalized for the weekend. She’d been ill for most of the last two months, but this was…bad. Fortunately, a team of amazing nurses and doctors were able to help her get on the road to recovery (and run several tests that eliminated the worst possibilities.) Since Mom’s been home, she’s been getting better every day, and if all goes well, she’s excited to come back to DemiCon with me this May.

One thing that got me through this terrifying experience was all the kind messages from friends that I’ve met at conventions. Lots of readers who attend either DemiCon or Fables and Flames have met Mom while she covered my table whenever I had a panel. Aside from the many well-wishes for her, I really appreciated all the messages checking on me as well while everything was going on. We’re both really lucky to have so many wonderful people thinking of us. 💖

When I’ve talked about community in the past, I’ve mentioned the importance of doing something whimsical just because it sparks joy. I never would have thought about how the communities formed during these conventions can continue over long after everyone has gone home.

With that said, I finally finished updating Events page of my website! (Panel info and signing hours will be coming later.) If traveling isn’t feasible right now, I highly recommend finding virtual communities. One of my favorites is Temporal Textual Talks: A Book Club (steampunk book club!) This weekend, on February 15th at 6:30 pm Central time, we’re meeting via Zoom to discuss “Rust in the Root” by Justina Ireland. I’ve been loving this book so far. It’s alternate history blended with a unique magic system and has a main character that I absolutely adore!

You don’t have to finish the book to participate in book club, but do know that there is the potential for spoilers. I always love the discussions led by Madame Askew and Bill Bodden! If you’re feeling shy about joining the meeting, you can always watch the stream on YouTube.

Today, I received the notification that Forsaken Beauty and the Etherbeast is now available on Hoopla! If your library uses Hoopla, OverDrive, or Palace Market Place to loan ebooks, you check out Forsaken Beauty and the Etherbeast. Monsters and Machines is on both OverDrive and Palace Market Place, but hasn’t updated yet on Hoopla (the upload time is notoriously slow!)

I’ve written before about how to request books at your local library. If your library doesn’t have my books in stock yet, you can follow the steps to ask. I’ve also signed books for libraries before because readers and librarians have brought copies with them (with permission) to conventions when I’m in their area. 💖

Daydreaming on the Page

One of my favorite parts of the writing process is daydreaming on the page. I usually start off by putting on a record or stream instrumental music and handwrite my ideas in one of several journals. It’s freeing to jot down anything and everything that comes to mind without the pressure of deadlines or wondering if a concept works. Not everything will make it into the outline, but it’s important for my process to explore the possibilities.

Over the last several days, I’ve been writing down snippets for a possible book idea that refuses to let me go. When I’m deep in revisions, I can’t dedicate much time to drafting the shiny new idea (or I’ll never finish anything), but writing down ideas as they come to me helps make sure that I don’t lose the story when I’m ready to commit to it.

I do the same thing for my panel ideas, which I’ll also be working on more in the coming days. Many of the conventions I’m attending later this year have panel pitch submissions due soon. If you’re going to any of these events and have something you’d like for me to talk about, please let me know! I’ve given presentations on everything from the 1893 World’s Fair to Monstrous Women and fairy tales.

For DemiCon, the Outpost theme is all about the influence of Westerns on modern sci-fi and fantasy. I’m considering doing a panel about weird westerns or maybe the influence of westerns on the Gothic (Quincey Morris, the American cowboy in Dracula, comes to mind.) I’m still thinking about exactly what I’d like to present about (and I need to make sure I’m on theme with the Gothic direction I’m thinking about.)

Whenever possible this winter, I’ve been refilling my creative well, and it’s already made a huge difference in my revisions process! I’ve played board games and solo TTRPGS, spent possibly a little too much time on the Animal Crossing update, participated in the Strong Women-Strange Worlds Holiday Extravaganza, attended virtual book club, tried new recipes, searched the Folklore Society’s archives, and made a long over-due visit to the Des Moines Art Center (I hope to be back soon!)

I also started attending classes at the local YMCA to break up my workday. Last week, I learned how to use barbells in new-to-me and interesting ways. It was a revelation and I loved it!

I hope you’re finding ways to recharge, too. For me, that means a blend of community and time alone, movement and stillness.

With that said, I’m so excited to share some upcoming events and news! (And yes, I’m still smiling about the fun award my book is up for!)

Part of getting organized for 2026 has been setting up my planners and traveler’s notebooks. For my system next year, I’m going back to using traveler’s notebooks in addition to a regular planner (that I customize heavily because I can’t help myself. 😂)

In my previous newsletter, I mentioned keeping Tamagotchis as a way of spending less time doom-scrolling, and while that is working (all of my silly digital pets are thriving), having a system to keep all my panel ideas and research notes together has become a necessity. For my in-depth notes, I digitize them in Obsidian before creating outlines for panels. (Some day, I’ll get better at uploading ALL of my notes. 😅)

I haven’t quite finished decorating my planner and journals, but it has been a blast using up my stash of crafty supplies on hand (yay for being thrifty!) I’m particularly excited to start filling in my research notes. My Merry Christmas to Me was joining The Folklore Society! This is the same London Folklore Society that I presented about at TeslaCon. Now I have access to all their archives that go back to 1878.

If I find myself in the UK, I also have access to the collection of 19,000 books, pamphlets, and serials at the University College London Library.😍

Anyway, I'm super excited for what this is going to do for my research for both panels and books. Give me ALL the archives! 💖📚

Speaking of books, the sequel to Monsters and Machines, Alchemy and Automatons, is out in 3 months! Be prepared to hear lots about Lucille and Rosie in the coming weeks! (The Clockwork Coffin is also coming out in 2026, too. If all goes well, I’m hoping to have it ready for the Chicago Steampunk Expo in June!)

Steampunk Events to Celebrate the New Year

Tonight at 7 pm Central time, Madame Askew and the Grand Arbiter are hosting The Hogmanay Variety Show virtually online for a couple hours of shenanigans and merriment. (Also, if you have a goal to read more in 2026, I highly recommend checking out Temporal Textual Talks: A Steampunk Book Club, hosted by Madame Askew and Bill Bodden. I love attending virtual book club every month and getting to participate in fun and thought-provoking conversations!)

For those of you local to Central Iowa, the BrassGears Adventurers Society is hosting their annual Chrononaut Cotillion on January 2nd from 8 pm to 1 am at the Holiday Inn and Suites Des Moines-Northwest! This year’s theme is Wild West. There will be dancing, drinks, door prizes, and burlesque performances by the Naughty Nerds. For more information, check out the event page (or pick up tickets here.)

Since I’ve returned from a whirlwind convention season in November (three events in one month!), I’ve spent a lot of time curled up by the fire with my TBR (or in some cases, rereads), cats, and Tamagotchis. Winter arrived all at once and it looks like it’s here to stay for a while. I’m so thankful for playing games and spending time with family over the last few days.

Finally being able to rest after a busy season is such a blessing! It’s been good to have a little time off, but I’m also so happy to be back at revisions and working on a few other projects. I’m also looking forward to my next event, Strong Women-Strange Worlds Holiday Extravaganza on December 13th!

Sneak Peek at All Things TeslaCon!

I can’t believe how soon TeslaCon is coming! When I’m not working on revisions, I’ve been finalizing my presentations. My notes about real folktale scholars arguing about the actual existence of fairies has cracked me up. I can’t wait to talk about it during my Fairies, Folklore & Superstitions of the Later Victorian Age panel!

Before I get to my schedule, here are the new stickers I’m debuting at the steampunk convention. These are vinyl, perfect for Kindles and laptops. They feature quotes from Forsaken Beauty and the Etherbeast, and also a tiny Nikola Tesla, because I very rarely see him on anything. (I’d love to have Nikola Tesla and Ada Lovelace action figures for my office to go with my Leonardo da Vinci one, but no such luck yet.)

I hope you’re taking time for yourself. Recent events have made me so grateful for community. Next month, I’ll be traveling to both TeslaCon and later in November to Fables and Flames, a romantasy gala. After spending the summer home with my family and working on revisions, it’ll be good to see readers, authors, and so many of my long-distance friends!

Hoopla is notoriously slow for updating their catalog, but you can find Forsaken Beauty and the Etherbeast along with all of my Strange Happenings stories in OverDrive and other library ebook distributors!

Since this event occurs only a few weeks after TeslaCon, I want to make sure that I have enough books on hand. If you’re attending Fables and Flames, you can find the pre-order link here.

You can join readers and authors (including me!) for a special tea on Saturday from 12:30 to 2 pm. Details about the tea party can be found here. I’m so excited because this is the first time I’ve ever participated in an author tea!

It’s been a minute since my last newsletter. Between back-to-school, family illnesses, Life Happenings™, and revisions, the end of summer has been busy! I’m happy to be settling into my favorite season, even if things are more hectic than I’d care for them to be. However, I have wonderful news this week, including library updates and details about my first EVER author tea party at Fables and Flames!

When I’m not buried in revisions and other projects, I also have been working on finalizing vinyl sticker designs for upcoming conventions. While most of the designs are some of the more popular quotes between Belle and Beast in Forsaken Beauty and the Etherbeast, I’m also planning on including a few of Captain Charity’s quotes. (The design for “Maker’s Moldy Knickers” cracked me up! It’s giving Monty Python vibes with the little airship doodle above the text.) More details soon!

Chatting about Airship Pirates, Cats, Automatons, and Fairy Tales at Temporal Textual Talks

I had an amazing time being this month’s guest author at Temporal Textual Talks! I loved all the questions and discussions around Forsaken Beauty and the Etherbeast. I’m so thankful that co-hosts Madame Askew and Bill Bodden gave me this opportunity. If you missed the live meeting, you can watch it on YouTube here:

One thing I briefly talked about was the prequel side story that I’m slowly (read VERY SLOWLY. There is no release date yet planned because I’m on a deadline for a few projects already! 😅😂)

In my notes, I have the backstory of how a certain airship pirate stole her automaton pilot from her future wife. I’m not sure yet if The Ballad of the Figment will be a novella or a full-length novel, but it’s been a joy to revisit these characters between rounds of revisions. Most of the story can be summed up from this Captain Charity quote from Forsaken Beauty and the Etherbeast:

“Do you think happy, well-adjusted people become airship pirates? I have a past. We all do. I’ve had the misfortune of being treated as property until I finally put a stop to it. There may have been explosions involved.”

A few other highlights from book club:

• More about Maureen’s backstory

• Musings on creating fairy tale retellings

• How I learned to plot watching K-dramas

• Thoughts about being an indie author (I’ve never queried and I talk a little bit about why I made my choices)

My compromise has been to get outside while I can and put up a few early Halloween decorations inside. (Parts of my house, especially my office, already look like Halloween year-round. At last count, I think there’s something like 13+ skeletons and skulls in my office mixed in with my books and steampunk trinkets.)

When I haven’t been buried in revisions and other projects, I’ve been escaping the humidity by playing a lot of board games! Recently, my copy of Kinfire Council arrived. I’m excited to play this soon! I love the lore book and all the art in these games.

I love being a mood reader/watcher/gamer! My newest favorite movies are Superman, Sinners, and K-Pop Demon Hunters. I recently finished reading Clockwork Boys by T. Kingfisher for book club (more on book club in a bit. I have fun news!) and now I’m currently reading The Enchanted Greenhouse by Sara Beth Durst. My youngest has been wanting to learn D&D. I’ve loved helping him get started.

I’m trying to take advantage of this time at home to catch up on my to-be-read/watch/played lists. Even though between my schedule and revisions I know I won’t get to everything, having options is always a good thing!

New Indie Romance Book Store!

I’m blessed to live in an area with several bookstores, but I’m so excited that Des Moines, Iowa, is getting its first indie bookstore dedicated to inclusive romances! If you’re new to QuickReads, the format is six authors read from a range of speculative fiction for eight minutes. Readers are welcome to interact with each other in the chat or post questions. After all the authors finish reading, there’s a Q&A session at the end.
